An Evening
with Quintessa
On Wednesday, April 9, 2003, Red Carpet hosted an evening with Quintessa at our wine bar. John Hardesty, the marketing manager of Quintessa Estate gave insight into the property and winemaking. He also conducted a component tasting, and sampled some library vintages with our group of wine enthusiasts.
In 1989 Augustin and Valeria Huneeus found the property that has since become Quintessa Estate, in the heart of Rutherford. Although never before planted to vineyards or any other produce crop, the land had all of the characteristics desirable to a great wine estate: rolling hills, streams, a lake, several micro-climates, and a diversity of complex soils.
Along with the Huneeus’, the current wine making consulting team at Quintessa includes Jacques Boissenot, Michel Rolland, Philippe Melka, and Sarah Gott.
John Hardesty brought barrel samples of Quintessa’s 2002 Cabernet from three estate vineyards: Corona Norte, Dragon’s Terraces, and Cruz del Sur. We sampled the wines by themselves and then made our own blends in the glass. It was fun to see the differences between the vineyards. Next we tasted the finished wines of 1995 and 1998, followed by the 1996 and 1999 vintages.
Quintessa makes some of the classiest red wines available from California. While the wines are robust, they are also smooth and delicate.
Production has been kept below 10,000 cases and is usually below 9,000 cases in most vintages.
At Red Carpet we currently have limited quantities of two vintages in stock:
1998 Quintessa Red Wine $79.97
1999 Quintessa Red Wine $88.11
