When it comes to purchasing wines that possess staying power we always look for the best vintages in a particular region. While we love to drink wines from many vintages, those overachievers that will lay down and improve best with extended bottle-ageing simply come from fabulous vintages. Many wineries producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage wines from Napa and Sonoma grapes hit a home run in 2001. We have been privileged to taste hundreds of these wines from barrel and more recently from bottle, and 2001 is simply a blockbuster year. These are the wines every collector and enthusiast needs to own.

2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is to Napa Valley and Sonoma what 2000 is to Bordeaux and 2002 in Australia. It is believed by many that 2001 is the finest vintage to date in the Northern California super premium wine regions. And not just the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes did well. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are excellent too. Some of the best Meritages we have tasted are from 2001. Additionally, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petit Sirah came in with exceptionally high quality.

Robert M. Parker, Jr. had this to say: “This is a superlative vintage in the North Coast. A cool (but not excessively so) growing season was followed by fabulous weather in September and October, allowing producers to harvest at their leisure. Crop size was reasonably good, and my tastings revealed the finest young California Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot I have ever tasted. The wines possess extraordinary ripeness as well as sweet tannin, high glycerin and alcohol levels, and astonishing balance. Comparisons to 1991 and 1994 are justified, but given the present day competition, and the number of producers attempting to fashion world-class wines, potentially this is a great vintage that looks remarkably consistent.”

James Laube of the Wine Spectator had this advise to offer in an article last November relevant to buying strategies: “Keep an eye on what's ahead, too. I expect the 2001 Cabernets, due for release next year, to be sensational. It should be a classic year for Cabernet and one to stockpile, on par with the high quality 1994 and 1997 vintages.”

"The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot all show signs of potential greatness," said Bob Levy, winemaker at Harlan Estate in Napa Valley. "The wines have the power and concentration of '94 and '97, without the superripe character that '97 brought us."

"Best since 1997," commented Mia Klein, winemaker for Dalle Valle, another Napa Valley cult winery. The wines have "great concentration, extract and sap."
