Back in February at Premier Napa Valley Weekend we bumped into the Anomaly winemaking team of Mark Porembski and Gerich Fellerman at the A.S.H. tasting or St. Helena tasting. We were impressed with their Cabernet Sauvignon and it was one of the top wines we tasted that weekend. Last month a couple of us happened to be in the valley and we phoned Gerich for an afternoon tour and tasting. This was after a Taylor ’s Refresher Ahi Burger of course. Anomaly is located at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains just west of the town of St. Helena . Anomaly’s Vineyards are adjacent to the Hayne Vineyard (Turley Zin, Chase). They specialize in the production of just one wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, from their six acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.  

Winemaker Mark Porembski, came to Anomaly via Behrens & Hitchcock where he has spent the past four years as assistant winemaker to Les Behrens. The ANOMALY CAB 2004 captures the richness of this ripe, warm and low-yielding year. The wine offers aromas of hazelnut, cocoa powder, dried herbs and dense, dark fruits. Notes of black cherry, tamarind and graphite flesh out its seamless palate. Firm, sweet tannins provide a supple, confident and creamy foundation before culminating in Anomaly’s signature, velvety finish. It was great visiting this tiny state of the art facility that is doing putting some amazing juice in the bottle. Don’t miss out on this last call of 2004 Anomaly. Cheers, Robert.
