The Green Fairy Has Returned

After being banned from the USA since 1912, Absinthe is now legal. Absinthe derives its name from Artemisia absinthium, a bitter herb know as wormwood. Wormwood contains an ingredient known as thujone which accounts for the alleged mind-altering properties that caused Absinthe to be banned.

Absinthe is usually green in color. That’s why it was referred to as La Fee Verte (The Green Fairy). In addition to wormwood, there are other herbal extracts added such as anise, hyssop, coriander, fennel seed and lemon balm. The flavor is similar to licorice and tends to be quite bitter. Because of the bitterness, most Absinthe drinkers add sugar to their glass.

About five years ago a modern version of Absinthe came into the market. It is called Absente, Absinthe Refined. The single difference of this version is the Wormwood was replaced with a less bitter cousin, Southern Wormwood, also known as “petite absinthe”. It is from France at 110 proof ($47.99).

We have two brands of the real stuff in stock.

Lucid from France at 124 proof ($70.99) and Kubler from Switzerland at 106 proof ($54.99).

Hopefully we will have the first American produced Absinthe – St. George Spirits Absinthe Vert and Absinto Camargo from Brazil in stock soon.
